Our Ranch Holiday Recommendations

LOST VALLEY Dude Ranch - Sedalla, Colorado

Whilst located only 60 miles south west of Denver , you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a totally wilderness area at The Lost Valley Ranch which is located in the Pike National Forest. Although a forest fire went through the area in 2002, the ranch was relatively un-affected. In fact repeat guests even say the views are far better now without so many trees!

With accommodation in high quality log cabins settled neatly around the main ranch house where guests gather for meals and entertainment. Lost Valley's big plus is it's kids and youth programmes with separate entertainment for smaller children, 6 to 12 year olds and the teenagers. Rides are also geared to your ability with morning and afternoon trips out. In September they have a number of Horsemanship Clinics and cattle round ups. It's a popular ranch for returning guests so early booking is recommended. Alcohol should only be consumed in your cabin. The ranch is open from April to November, Sunday to Sunday. They offer a transfer service between Denver and the ranch.

WHITE STALLION Dude Ranch - Tucson, Arizona

A delightful Spanish style ranch only 17 miles from Tucson, yet in an isolated and quiet desert garden setting. Rugged mountains form a backdrop to the rides, both fast and slow, which take you over the once wild range. Seasonal all day rides into the Saguaro National Monumentat an easy pace are a perfect way to experience the desert. Purebred Texas longhorn cattle graze White Stallion's 3000 acres and the weekly rodeo with team roping, steer wrestling, a cutting horse demonstration and barrel racing gives the wranglers a chance to show off their cowboy skills. Children and adults if they wish may brush and saddle their own horse. A warm hospitable ranch which basks in the glorious Arizona sun. Transfers are included from Tucson. Open year round. Any day start.

CHEROKEE PARK Dude Ranch - Livermore, Colorado

One of Colorado's best kept secrets, Cherokee Park Ranch was once a turn of the century stagecoach stop. Situated at 7000 ft in an unpopulated corner of the vast Roosevelt National Forest, 100 miles north of Denver. Comfortable rustic and modernised accommodations have kept the character of the ranch well preserved. The ranch has a great bunch of wranglers and horses to assure a variety of scenic rides. With a lively supervised programme for children and an optional pack trip, Cherokee Park provides a perfect ranch vacation. Open May to September, Saturday to Saturday. Early booking recommended.

63 RANCH Guest Ranch - Livingstone, Montana

The ranch sits at 5,600 feet altitude below Elephant Head Mountain, 50 miles north of Yellowstone National Park and 12 miles from Livingston. The various cabins are tucked among aspen and pine, rustic log or frame construction with modern bathrooms, plenty of hot water and firm twin & double beds. They welcome singles, couples or families in comfort, peace and privacy. With the 21 day menu you would have to stay four weeks to repeat meals. They take pride in serving tender beef from their own herd, Delicious pork, poultry and fish; fresh vegetables and fruits; fresh baked breads; homemade pies and cakes. Horses outnumber guests two to one. They are a joy to ride and there are mounts for everyone from children to the most expert of equestrians. There are full day rides weekly but you can ride independantly at any time, over 100 miles of trails. But there is more than just riding at this ranch, with the opportunity to take part in nature walks and various sports. There are beautiful landscapes and views across forests, lofty peaks and lakes, canyons and cascading creeks. It is home to elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, moose, mountain lion and bear. Mission Creek is full of wild trout, runs for 3.5 miles through the ranch. Fishing in nearby Blue Ribbon rivers, spring creeks and lakes is world famous. Transfers charges from Bozeman are paid locally and cost about $40 per person each way (subject to change due to fuel price increases) For the 2013 season and runs Sunday to Saturday.

SILVER SPUR RANCH Working Ranch - Dubois, Idaho

This rustic Idaho working ranch is located just 5 miles from the Idaho / Montana border and the Continental Divide and is bordered by several thousand acres of State land and natural forests. The ranch has no mains water or electricity so all the log cabins have propane heating & lighting and hot outdoor showers and outdoor lavatories. There is everything else to make your stay memorable, a cook house for meals and a cozy bunk house or cabins for sleeping. Sunday is your day of arrival when you get to know your companions for the week, Monday is spent getting to know your mount and riding in the vicinity of the ranch. The drive starts on Tuesday and you will sleep out in pre-erected tents for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night. You return to the ranch on Friday for the farewell dinner and depart on Saturday back to Jackson or Idaho Falls after breakfast.

Usually, fourteen of these summertime drives are offered. The Horse drives are a demanding time for all; trailing fast moving creatures some 20 miles a day over all kinds of terrain. You should be at least an Intermediate level rider to fully enjoy this trip. All equipment, including sleeping bags, is included by the ranch Transfers are usually from Jackson in the afternoon. You will return to Jackson also in the afternoon of the following Saturday so it is well worth spending a last night in town and visiting the Saturday Night Rodeo that operates in the summer months. The Jackson transfer is $175 return per person. Jackson is a great area and close to Yellowstone National Park for post ranch touring. Idaho Falls transfers are $100 per person. The ranchers generally take about 12 people on a horse drive as this is a manageable number to cater for and to keep the herd together. It's worth noting that many western ranches are well above sea level, between 5500 and 8000 feet or more, some people can be affected by this altitude.
